MassageNet is excited to share that another massage therapy-focused research study participation opportunity is now available to MassageNet members and their various professional and social networks. This new study is being conducted by Tina Brown, a licensed massage therapist who is also a doctoral candidate at Indiana University Indianapolis.
Tina’s study is titled “Novel Accountability Method for a Self Massage Intervention Among Adults with Knee Pain,” and focuses on a home based self massage protocol for individuals with chronic or intermittent knee pain. The intervention is adapted from the established self massage protocol described by Atkins & Eichler (2013) published in IJTMB, which demonstrated positive effects of self massage for osteoarthritis of the knee. This study is approved by Indiana University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB #30805).
Participants will complete a four week quadriceps self massage protocol (10 minutes per day, at least four days per week) while participating in a private, hidden Facebook group facilitated by the research team. The virtual framework and support group is intended to provide education, social support, and accountability while enabling participants to complete the intervention entirely from home. Additionally, participants will complete short online surveys once a week for about a month.
The study is recruiting any individual that has knee pain, as long as the pain is persistent or reoccurring for at least three months or longer. People receiving professional massage therapy generally or specifically for their knee pain ARE ELIGIBLE to participate, and may continue their professional massage therapy treatments with you throughout the study. In fact, study personnel believe this may be a great accompaniment to care you are already providing for clients with knee pain.
Consider sharing this research participation opportunity through your client and personal / social networks to get the word out! If you experience persistent knee pain, consider participating yourself!
